UNESCO Global Monitoring Report released

The Education for All Global Monitoring Report 2010 was released on January 19th. Five years before the due date of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), which claim among others primary school education for all children worldwide, the process still draggs behind. Today, 72 million children are not attending school, projections for 2015 show that this situation won't change for 56 million primary school aged children until then. The report identifies the global financial crisis as one reason for this failure. While aid commitments have been stable until the breakout of the crisis, they have reduced by more than one fifth in 2007. Ten years ago, the donor countries agreed that the goal 'education for all' shall not be missed due to a lack of resources. But the report calculates that there is a lack of US$ 16 billion to achive full primary education in the 46 least developed countries, which have been donated US$ 2.7 billion so far.

Rwandatel's Fibre-Optic Cable to Reach Kigali By April

From: AllAfrica.com

Despite delays, Rwandatel's 900 Km fibre-optic cable is expected to land in Kigali by April this year. This was revealed by the company's Chief Technical Officer (CTO), Basilio Sadindi during an exclusive interview with the Business Times. The cable, which will be delivered by Green Future, had been slated to land in Kigali by January 2010. Sadindi said that Uganda Telecom (UTL)-a sister company of Rwandatel was tasked to lay the cable from Kampala to Masaka. However, the cable was not yet fully connected by the December deadline. "Ducting the Fibre from the Katuna to Kigali is government's work. If it reaches Kigali, we shall only require six weeks to lay our own channel," Sadindi explained. In September, Rwandatel and UTL contracted Green Future to deliver SEACOM's fibre connection. After a full connection to the under sea cable, Rwandatel's Internet subscriber base is projected to increase by 10 percent in the first 12 months.

The article shows how even countries whose populations suffer from food shortages invite international inverstors to buy arable land, and how 125 years after the african continent was devided by the colonial powers of that time, history repeats.
